Tune in: The Long Fight for Texas Adoptees to Gain Access to Their Original Birth Certificates

Over the last two decades there's been a slow but steady movement across the U.S. to restore access to original birth certificates for people who are adopted. This year, South Dakota and Vermont became the thirteenth and fourteenth states to do so.

Texas Standard intern Amanda Kari McHugh is an adoptee born in New York. That state gave access to these birth certificates in 2020. She's been digging into the efforts to do the same here in Texas, why it matters and what's holding it up. Check out her story today!

Tune in: Why the writers’ and actors’ strikes are ‘unbelievably bad timing’ for the Texas film industry

Note: I wrote and recorded the audio and took the photos for this social video. Wells Dunbar edited the video.

Texas was once a booming force in the film and television industry, but when tax incentives were stripped from the state, work started moving to other southern states.

It has remained a decent place to make independent, non-union films and film commercials. However, with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA contract negotiations looming, work in LA and NYC started drying up for crew members starting as early as last fall.

Union crew members in Texas who were looking forward to more work have found their work has dried up alongside those crew members on the coasts.

We'll have more about the strike's impact on Texas on the show!

The Family Tree

I’m proud to say that Terry A. McHugh is my father and his story is a story that millions of Americans can relate to.

Born in 1949 as a second-generation Christmas tree

farmer in Western New York, like most baby boomers who are lower to middle-class, his values were developed such that work, more than anything, defined you. My father never wanted to retire, in fact he saw it as a death sentence; and he wanted to make sure that I was raised to believe that if you pursue your passions hard enough...

Sethward Runs a 5K

While shooting the live Jive Joint stage shows at Lightning in a Bottle in 2017, I conceptualized this idea of Sethward running the festival's 5K race, but constantly getting distracted. Sethward (of AGT, and Gong Show fame) and I collaborated on this idea as we shot him getting into shenanigans, and interviewing unsuspecting festival goers.

This later screened at "Sethward's Show & Tell Screening Spectacular"

Star/Finishing Editing: Sethward Allison

B. Squid - "Radio Silence" - Official Video!

This is a music video that I conceptualized the live action of, directed, produced, cast, and production coordinated, everything that is live, and much of the live action post-production. The artist took the live action video we created, and added on the animation with her collaborator afterwards.

Burning Man Shaman Wedding - Twin Flame Union - The Full Ceremony

This is the full video of my good friends Dina and Daniel's wedding ceremony at Burning Man. I shot the interviews and shot the bulk of the ceremony footage, and directed a second videographer. Dina carried it through post-production.

Directors: Dina Divine, and Amanda Kari McHugh (myself)
Cinematography: Amanda Kari McHugh, Jake Lama, and Dina Divine
Stills Photographer: Alex Svirlov

Well, Hot Dog! This Swell COVID PSA Will Bring A Smile To Anyone’s Face - The Drill Mag

An article featuring the PSA I created and self-distributed on COVID-19 Etiquette in 2020.

"Check out this Pandemic PSA at Drive-ins!

It is SO tough to keep your spirits lifted during this holiday Season, ESPECIALLY since everywhere you look is a reminder of the anxiety surrounding us and our loved ones. But sometimes we need a refresher course and cannot make ourselves log onto the CDC website again, knowing it’ll really dampen our groove. So, this is the perfect vid to share with family to remind them that you love them AND that you want to give them a smile!"

Life Line Booth Trailer

Life Line Booth is a social outreach docu-series (premiering on Pivot TV) where sidewalks in destitute, underserved neighborhoods are transformed into havens by way of donated items, set up there for anyone's taking. Stories and wisdom are shared by the community and intended to shatter the stigmas associated with those experiencing homelessness.

Those watching at home are inspired to give back to others in thoughtful and creative ways, in addition to being encouraged to look out their own bubbles and interact with those forgotten people.

Created and Directed by Ryan Oksenberg.

Selfless LA Springs Into Life

This video is a short documentary about the first engagement project I ever co-produced, which was serving the homeless in LA's skid row:

"LBD Films documented the formative stages of Selfless LA, a non profit organization dedicated to serving the community. Through artist collaboration and by working with organizations such as the Los Angeles Youth Network and various charitable organizations aimed at fighting homelessness, Selfless LA seeks to end the stigma that LA is a city driven only by ego."
